Nebraska Medical Center (often referred to as “The Med”) is the flagship hospital of Nebraska Medicine, serving as a major academic medical center in Omaha. It is partnered with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).
This hospital handles a broad range of care, including highly specialized and complex cases that smaller hospitals may refer. It aims to combine patient care, education, and clinical research under one roof.
The hospital is licensed with approximately 718 acute-care beds.
It includes advanced specialty services, comprehensive inpatient and outpatient clinics, and a wide network of supporting facilities.
Nebraska Medicine operates two main hospital campuses (Omaha and Bellevue) and over 70 specialty and primary care clinics in the region.
Its facilities include a Biocontainment Unit, which is one of only a few specialized units in the U.S. prepared to handle highly infectious diseases.
Nebraska Medical Center is known for excellence in many areas, including but not limited to:
Organ transplantation
Cancer treatment (oncology)
Neurology and neurosurgery
Gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery
Heart disease, bypass surgery, heart failure
Orthopedics and joint replacement
Advanced diagnostics, imaging, and pathology services
Emergency and trauma care, including referrals of complex cases
Its oncology and GI surgery programs have been ranked among the top in the country.
It also earned recognition consistently as the No. 1 hospital in Nebraska by U.S. News & World Report for many years in a row.
Because it is affiliated with UNMC, the hospital is a center for training physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
Clinical trials, medical research, and translational studies are integral parts of its operations.
The hospital has been ranked repeatedly as the top hospital in Nebraska.
Its programs in oncology, neurology, and gastroenterology are nationally recognized.
It is also notable for housing one of the few U.S. biocontainment units, supporting preparedness for disease outbreaks.
A major upcoming expansion is Project Health Tower, a planned new high-rise medical facility that aims to consolidate and modernize many of its hospital functions.
The Project Health Tower is expected to include about 550 beds and serve as a primary inpatient hospital and training facility once completed (estimated around 2030).
The hospital continually upgrades its infrastructure, technology, and service lines to keep pace with medical advances.
